Story behind wtchout.com
Inventor of the product, entrepreneur Katja Wirenius tells the story: I first took up trail running as a hobby in spring 2017 on group runs organized by The Outdoor Association of Finland in my home town. I had run frequently on paved roads, but moving to forest trails forced me to buy new gear. One of my new purchases was a sports watch worn on the wrist that displays my running route and measures the heart rate on my wrist.
Everything was fine in the summertime, but as the weather grew colder in the autumn, using the watch started to feel unpleasant; it came between my sleeve and glove so that the cold air caused chills right where the watch band went. I started to observe my fellow runners during our runs and noticed that many wore their watch on top of their coat due to the cold weather – what a waste of great features! Sure, they could see and use the watch, but it no longer measured their heart rate, and the results of the workout (intensity, calorie consumption and other data) were no longer available.
I started to think about a solution for the challenge that I had encountered – how to get the most out of the watch without experiencing cold chills? I have worked as a craft teacher so it felt natural to start thinking about a suitable textile product to solve the issue. At first, I sketched various models, examined ready-made textiles and then sewed prototypes for testing. As the process went on, I surveyed the market and noticed that similar products were not yet available.
I therefore wanted to protect my design and, in autumn 2017, I first applied for a Finnish utility model and later, in summer 2018, for an international PCT patent. At the same time, I continued to develop the model and test prototypes on my own runs together with my spouse and my runner friends. Now, the product is finally ready for full-scale production. After 1.5 years of material and model testing, the simple, but practical wtchout.com wrist cover, was born. The product is a separate, tube-like textile product with an opening for a sports watch. It can be used by runners, skiers, walkers, hikers, cyclists and anyone who enjoys any type of outdoor exercise.
